Sometimes, you sit down at your desk to create a world, or you leaf through your books of published worlds, and your own created worlds. You just don’t know which one to choose from. Or even if you want to use one.
This booklet will help you.
To start off with, you should roll 1d8 twice for the type of world you want your world to be from the options below. You can choose to mesh those ideas together (you might come up with something new and become famous with that!) Or you can just choose one of them. Some of the options are: High Fantasy, Low Fantasy, Middle Fantasy (yes, I made that up), Historical Fantasy, etc.
1. High Fantasy: A world with floating islands, many different Races other than humans, and magic is everywhere.
2. Middle Fantasy: A world that has an equal amount of magic and fighting skill. There are many different Races, but there are more humans (this is my type of world).
3. Low Fantasy: A world where the main Race is human, and there are not many other Races in the world. There is not much magic, and most adventurers in the world are not that powerful.
4. Historical Fantasy: Most of the world is influenced by real events in history. Most of the time Historical Fantasy is like Low Fantasy or Middle Fantasy except that you add on that it is based on historical events in the world.
5. Horror Fantasy: Horror Fantasy is where monsters are everywhere prowling in the night, and civilians and even adventurers live in fear of the monsters. There is not much magic in this type of world either.
6. Fairy Tale Fantasy: This type of fantasy is very like any Fairy Tale you have heard. But, don’t worry! This is not like “and they live happily ever after. The end.” No, it is like a Grimms fairy tale. Where Elves like you know in modern fantasy (you know, people with pointed ears, and all of them tall, with a specialty with magic), go into villages, and steal wive’s babies, then bring those babies to the “magic woods” of the world. These Elves are much like the Elves of Mirkwood in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, of course, his Elves are much more good, and are more like tricksters, and can be a bit mean. But, you know what I mean!
7. Comedy Fantasy: Comedy Fantasy is a world where almost all things are nice and friendly, and most of the adventures the adventurers go on, are just funny. Of course, they could also be funny to the GM, like the “Mines of Madness” adventure. But I think you know what I mean when I say “comedy”.
8. “Knights in Shining Armor” Fantasy: This type of fantasy is like a King Arthur fantasy. It is hard to describe. This type of fantasy is basically the same thing as historical fantasy, except that it is only about the Medieval times. And is based primarily on King Arthur.
