Many people say that war-games were invented recently. About 100 years ago at least. And of course, these wargames lead to the creation of the first Role Playing Game: Dungeons and Dragons. But wargames were invented a long time before the traditional wargame was. Or, as I like to phrase it: wargames were invented before wargames. Now, lets go a bit deeper into this.
Everyone thinks that wargames were invented around the 1900s, recently. But that is not when wargames were invented. That is when modern wargames were invented. When wargames were invented a long time before that. Wargames were invented with the arrival of Chess. That is when war-games were invented.
As you are reading this, you will probably think, no! Chess is a board game! Not a wargame! But, no, you are wrong, and I will tell you why.
Lets look at the features of a wargame. A wargame is where people buy figurines and bring them to the table to fight battles against each other. Each figurine has specific abilities that make that figurine unique. Now about the rules. Most wargames have a turn system, where each turn a player moves or attacks the other player. Now lets look at the features of Chess.
A Chess game is where one person buys a Chess set. Two people get together and move and attack with figurines that have different abilities that make them unique against each other.
Now, when we overviewed each game, didn't I basically say the exact same thing for each game? Yes, I did. The only difference is that in a wargame, both players can buy figurines, not just one person.
But, all together, wargames were invented before wargames.
