Being inspired by another site that did the same thing, I am going to write down my process of thinking on creating a world from scratch. Lets start!
Now, I do not know very much about the Dragonlance setting, other than it is a world that is based around dragons (as far as I know). I like that idea, but I cannot take that idea right from the Dragonlance campaign setting, so I think I might want to choose from a different breed of creatures. I will list some of these breeds below.
1. Giants
2. Goblins
3. Orcs
4. Genies
5. Elementals
6. Undead
7. Demons & Devils
8. Demons
9. Devils
10. Elves
11. Dwarves
12. Humans (nah)
13. Drow
14. Trolls
15. Liches
I also might want to base it around different Classes in the game of D&D, or roles.
1. Knights
2. Sorcerers
3. Wizards
4. Warlocks
5. Druids
6. Rangers
7. Barbarians
Looking over my lists I can already tell which ones definitely need to go out. Because, you see, another reason I am doing this is because I want to make a world that is easily slotted into D&D, although unique at the same time, because most of the worlds I create that do slot into the basic format of D&D, are bland, the ones that don’t, are interesting.
So some of the basic creatures and Classes, and some of the too unique creatures Classes of my lists will probably come out.
I will start taking some of them out.
I like the Giant idea, because it would be cool to have a world based around Giants who stand out pesky small Races, and have the world shake with Giant footsteps. So even though Giants are basic, I am going to keep them.
For me, Goblins and Orcs are a little to basic, so I’ll take them out of the list, however, if I keep with the Giant idea, the Goblins and Orcs could be like pawns of the Giants, and there could be different clans of them under one certain type of Giant. However, Goblins and Orcs are out for now.
I like the Genie idea, because then the world could be a desert and arabic type world, with Genies fating the outcome of different people. However, that type of world is not really to my tastes, so I am going to take them out. Also, Genies are bit too unique to D&D.
Now that I realize it, no way Elementals are going to be the ruling power of the world, I’m going to take them out.
Undead, nah, it would be sort of like an apocalyptic world, and I am not aiming for that.
I like Demons and Devils a lot, but those are also a little too unique to D&D, I take them out.
Elves and Dwarves? Definitely not! That would give too much power to those Races!
Humans, I already took out with the (nah).
Drow, I like them, I’m going to keep them, but change the name to the more basic Dark Elf.
Trolls, like Orcs and Goblins, maybe for later as pawns for Giants, but for now, no.
Liches are too much like wizards, anyway they are soon unique to D&D. Take them out.
Now for Knights. I like the idea of Knights ruling the world with chivalrous codes. So I am going to keep them in, maybe I could have the knights as Giant-Hunters if I keep both of them in!
Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards are also a good idea, but I think that would be a tad to much like Athas, although I don’t really know much about Athas either. I am going to keep Wizards in, but Sorcerers and Warlocks out.
Druids I don’t think would be a very good idea, since they are a little bit to unique to D&D for my tastes. Also, they are a little bit to quite to be shaping the worlds history.
Rangers, I am going to keep in just because they could be helpers or allied with the knights as Giant-Hunters.
Barbarians I also like, so I am going to keep in the world. Because they could have shaped the world by rampaging and killing most of the people in the world. I am going to keep them.
So now I have modified and taken out the list I made. I am going to put the new list below.
Races & Creatures
1. Giants
2. Dark Elves
Classes & Roles
1. Knights
2. Wizards
3. Rangers
4. Barbarians
The new list is much more smaller than the last one. I think I will stop here and have a think about my choices for later.
